... no occasion or event in Scotland is complete without the bagpipes.
Hi, I am Tom MacArthur A.K.A. Tam The Piper.
It means the world to me to be able to play the pipes whether just practicing at home, playing for fun, or playing for people. I have been very lucky to have had excellent teachers and a lot of understanding neighbours over the years as you might imagine!
No complaints from neighbours in almost 40 years is pretty impressive I think!
Playing the pipes is a pleasure in itself but it is an absolute honour and a privilege to be able to play at some of the most important moments in people’s lives.
I have been very fortunate to have been asked to pipe at weddings, funerals, parties, corporate and charity events.
I have been playing now for almost 40 years, all the way from picking up a practice chanter for the first time until now. I performed in solo competitions, pipe bands, folk bands and at many special occasions and events.
I was around 10 or 11 years old when I played in my first competition on chanter and every time I have played since, regardless of where, when or why, I treat every single one with the same importance
Piping at my first wedding, aged 14, was a huge deal for me and every single special occasion or event that I have played at since has been equally as big a deal.
I am enjoying my piping now more than ever and hope you will too.
Thank you for taking the time to drop by my website and I hope that I may have the honour of playing for you at some point. After all, no occasion or event in Scotland is complete without the bagpipes.
Take care and slainte mhath
Hear me play
History
I began learning the Chanter when I was only eight years old and progressed to the bagpipes by the time I was 12. By then I was playing with the School Pipe Band and a only a year later was proud to be playing in the Senior Pipe Band.
At 14 I was invited to join a folk band and went on to enjoy 13 years with them, playing the bagpipes and flute.
I started competing as a solo piper during my teens and early 20's playing in 60 - 70 competitions and winning numerous medals and trophies which included the Argyllshire Local Senior Championship aged 16.
All through this time I was being asked to play at weddings (first one aged 14) and have continuously had the honour of playing at weddings for friends, family and others over the ensuing years.
In 2013 I took the decision to set up my own business as a professional piper playing not purely for the wedding industry but also for corporate events, charity events, Burns suppers, parties, funerals and the like.
Since then I've had the great honour and privilege of playing for many weddings and other events and occasions, providing quality and a personalised piping services seven days a week.
I have built up a good number of delighted clients, mainly through ‘word-of-mouth’ contact but recently embraced social media to attract a wider audience. This has proved extremely successful and you can now find me on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and YouTube.
